Gynecomastia in Adolescents - Patient 35
This 16 year old male from Los Angeles, CA, who is 5'9 and weighs 175 pounds suffered a condition called Gynecomastia in which there is an abnormal development of large mammary glands. The condition began when he was only 8 years of age, and although this is a common condition in adolescent boys from the age of 12 to 18 which improves with age, in severe cases, such as this teen, the condition will not correct itself with age. He began to become embarrassed about his appearance when his peers began teasing him relentlessly. His parents became concerned about his psychological development and consulted with Dr. Blau, board certified plastic surgeon and a diplomat of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. They were impressed by his credentials with over 20 years experience and also a world-authority authority on the subject of Gynecomastia. After the recommendation from Dr. Blau, the young man and his parents decided the best route was male breast reduction surgery to improve his quality of life. The procedure involved the excision of the mammary tissue along with liposuction. The teen returned to Los Angeles with a confidence he had not previously experienced and his parents report that he no longer avoids social situations with his peers.
