Gynecomastia in Adolescents - Patient 14
This is a 17 year old male from Westchester, NY who had been enduring Gynecomastia, a condition that forms due to the development of glandular tissue underneath the male breast resulting in an enlargement. 30% to 60% of adolescent boys between the ages of 8 and 12 develop Adolescent Gynecomastia, and although the milder cases often resolve on their own (usually by age 17), more severe or tubular cases will not dissipate with maturity. This teen felt embarrassed about his condition and withdrew from activities that required him to remove his shirt in front of his peers for fear of being teased. After confiding in a teacher about his concerns, the teacher sat down with him and his parents to discuss the issue. Upon doing much research on the condition, they decided to consult with Dr. Mordcai Blau, board certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years experience. They felt comfortable with Dr. Blau because he is revered as the utmost authority world-wide in Gynecomastia surgery and also a well-accomplished author on the subject. Male breast reduction surgery was performed, excising the glandular tissue followed by a small amount of liposuction. The incision is only an inch in diameter and inconspicuously located beneath the areola. The patient is very happy with the results and is relieved to no longer feel embarrassed by the prospect of removing his shirt in public.
